Race Cancellation Notice
The Alloa Half Marathon WILL NOT Be Taking Place Tomorrow
Since our last update we have been taking on board further weather information and safety advice, and it is with a heavy heart that the decision has been taken to POSTPONE the 2018 Alloa Half Marathon. We do not yet have a rescheduled date confirmed, however we will let all participants know as soon as a date is set.
You will no doubt be aware of the weather forecast for tomorrow. We tried our best to ensure that the race could go ahead as planned, despite the weather, and we had discussions with all relevant authorities, roads departments, insurers, etc.
However, the question which needed to be asked was whether permitting the race to go ahead could pose an unreasonable risk, not just to the runners, but to all race stakeholders, including the marshals, stewards, volunteers, spectators, traffic, etc.
We were advised by our local roads department that we would likely have several cms of snow the ground before race time. The course would be gritted but deemed risky.
When faced with a weather forecast including a MET Office yellow weather warning, freezing ground temperatures, 30mph gusts, snow showers and a real feel air temperature of -6C, all advice pointed to postponement.
Even for the fittest of our runners, this would have been a very tough test. But we have also to remember all those involved in the race, from amateur runners to the volunteer stewards, who would be out on the course for much longer times, and far more susceptible to heat loss. We have seen examples of hypothermia in conditions less than those expected tomorrow.
While we were confident that we had a good first aid resource in place, it would have been challenging, for example, to deal with multiple cases of hypothermia at distant parts of the course, and so the decision was taken to postpone the race.
We are, however, as disappointed as you are.
This is a community race with a rich history, and it is organised by volunteers on a not-for-profit basis. Each year, the Alloa Half Marathon raises significant funds for good causes near and far. It is for these reasons that we intend to reschedule the event later in the year.
We know that a number of participants have travelled a long way for the race, and we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by postponing this event. We would liked to have made this announcement earlier, however, this is always difficult with a large event involving many stakeholder, and even more so when dealing with weather.
We are grateful for your understanding and for your continued support of this event, and we are certain that together we will make the rescheduled 36th Alloa Half Marathon a fantastic event, as always – get your suncream looked out!
